But what key words would trigger ads for the front page? I disagree with this article. Google's front page is fine, they have a start page that users can use that's very portal like. Part of Google's story is its clean front page, infringing on that is diluting the brand. Those of us dependent on Google use the toolbar for quick access to Google resources anyhow. There is more than one way to peal a banana.

This is a pretty daft post Henry. I'm usually a fan of your insightful ideas, but when it comse to redesigning Google, you're way off base. I've heard Google has a team of UI people who tweak there site and measure usage patterns. I'm pretty sure they know that screwing around in the way you suggest is a bad idea. Here's the thing about "portals". Google is increasingly doing all the things that Yahoo does, but it doesn't try to cram them all down your throat at once. And a good thing too. I go to Google to search. If i want News I go to news.google.com. If i want maps i go to maps.google.com. I don't want my Google page stuff with crap that I rarely use.
If google can detect that my search is about News, or a map search, then fine, show me results from those search engines on google.com, but don't DONT put them all on the main page when i don't care about them. That creates the confusing clutter that is Yahoo's horrible frontpage. And by the way, i think the term "portal" is almost useless as a word to communicate any meaning. Sure Google does a lot of different services, but its main page doesn't look anything like a site like Yahoo, which I mentally associate with the word "portal".
