Moo+Flickr To Disrupt Getty Images and Vistaprint?

Jason Jones:  Om Malik's 'Small is the New Big' highlights Moo Prints, a UK based business card company that uses images posted to Flickr (or other social networks).  The result is personalized mini business cards.

I received a Moo card the other day from a friend who used a photo of himself kite-surfing. It was creative and memorable.... way better than your average boring business card.  I immediately wanted my own.

I think Moo and Flickr could disrupt Getty Images' (GYI) and VistaPrint's (VPRT) businesses.  For now, Moo only lets you print your own Flickr images, but it is only a matter of time before Flickr starts selling stock photos created by other Flickr users at a fraction of the price that GYI charges for "professional" photos.

Moo may also challenge Vistaprint, the leading producer of business cards (and other custom business supplies) in the small and medium sized business space. Moo can grow virally through the social networks but will need to bridge the gap from consumer to small businesses to really compete with VPRT.

Wrong.

Moo has miles and miles to go to get to the markets served by vistaprint. If they sell geeky business cards it doesn't mean they can sell what small businesses need. Only a fraction of people involved in small businesses are participating in social networking. They just don't have time for idle web surfing. They tend to opt out for the first thing they can find, which happens to be Vistaprint, thanx to their HUGE advertising budget.

Getty Images sells professional photos of people and events that cannot be obtained through other channels. Nothing to do with Flickr.

Not sure I understand this post.

What they're doing is not new.

Most online printing sites -- like iPrint.com -- have been uploading photos for over a decade.

And, putting photos on more than just business cards... everything from t-shirts to coffee mugs to post-it notes (which I think is really a killer product).

$25 buck for Moo Cards sounds expensive, too (from the Om post)... iPrint is about 25% less.

There are a lot of online printers that allow you to print your own photos on cards. I particularly like Ooprint.
You can upload photos, artwork, logos, images and they offer more products than Moo cards. They have business cards (in many sizes), square cards, invitations, postcards, greeting cards, and you are not limited to using Flickr images. Their printing quality is very good, even with photos!
